The Space

Three parallel sound channels.
One shared movement space.

Experience

The Space

A three-channel listening and movement work

One space. Three channels. A shared beginning and end.

One spaceA gallery, a garden, the open air. The venue changes, the work stays the same.
Three channelsThree parallel musics in the headphones. You choose which one to hear.
Around an hourBegins with shared music and a live voice, ends together.

When the channels open, each person chooses what feels right in the moment and may switch at any time.

No dance experience neededYou may moveYou may pauseYou may simply listen

Those on the same channel hear the same music. Three temporary listening communities form in the space. As channels change, so does the order of the space. Together, an unwritten choreography of that moment.

Founder and card

The founder stays in the space throughout, on the Ground channel; her voice is heard at the opening and the closing.

On arrival everyone receives a small card; you may write on it or not, and the card stays with you.

What we hear does not determine how we move.

GROUND

Beatless, slow. The channel where everyone begins and returns.

WATER

Mid tempo, soft.

FIRE

Fast tempo, dense.

Shared closing · everyone meets again on Ground

You choose a channel. You may switch at any time. The colour on your headphones shows the channel you are on.

We cannot know in advance which rhythm will resonate with whom; each body responds differently.

All three channels pass through the same five parts:

Arrival→ Source→ Exploration→ Expression→ Integration

The experience opens together and closes together.

Approach

An invitation to choose your own rhythm

Each of us has a different rhythm. The same music, the same space and the same moment do not land the same way in everyone.

Sometimes we want to slow down, sometimes to speed up, sometimes to stay where we are. The Space does not reduce this difference to a single form: music sets the conditions and does not prescribe movement; the choice stays with the participant.

Music and body

The tempo of music changes breathing and heart rate in measurable ways; this effect does not depend on personal musical preference.

See Bernardi, Porta and Sleight, Heart, 2006.

Body and choice

Noticing what is happening in the body helps us tell apart what we feel and what we need. The space of choice opens from there:

  • which channel to choose
  • how our movement takes shape
  • when to pause or to leave

See Damasio and Carvalho, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2013.

Throughout the experience there is invitation, not instruction.

No single right way to take partNo set choreographyNo expected feelingWitnessingNo interpretation or evaluation

The session opens with a live voice and closes together. Participants may change channels, pause or leave the experience at any moment. A space holder accompanies the process, keeping its practical and ethical frame.

Fields it draws on

RESONA is in dialogue with movement practices and research traditions such as modern dance and movement improvisation, Anna Halprin and Tamalpa's Life/Art Process, 5Rhythms, Axis Syllabus, release technique and Technosomatics.

Its sound world draws on electronic music, sound design and participatory sound works experienced through headphones. Its psychological layer carries traces of research on body awareness and interoception, attachment theory, emotion research and relational approaches.

Free movement practices such as Flow Dance Meditation and ecstatic dance are among the neighbours of this field. RESONA is not an application of any of them; with three parallel sound channels, the freedom to change channel, a shared beginning and end, and an ethic of witnessing, it builds an experience architecture of its own.

Music

The music of the three channels

The music of the three channels was produced for RESONA by UK-based DJ and sound designer Kerry Warren.

It was produced in response to the Sound Charter developed by Serpil Endirlik; this framework defines how the channels relate to one another and the language of the transitions.

Each channel has its own tempo, texture and character. Transitions move without breaking the flow.

The music of The Space also makes room for new sounds: in Portrait editions, the sound worlds of other artists, DJs and musicians can accompany this music as guest channels.

Editions

Editions

The Space is presented as a new edition each time. The protocol stays the same: three channels, a live opening and closing, the card, a shared beginning and end. Venue, duration and guest sound change.

A gallery. A house. A garden. A terrace. Or the open air.
The venue changes; the essence of the experience does not.

Realised

  • Urla, 2026 · closed session for dancers
  • Datça, August 2026 · two public presentations

Venue edition

A gallery, a garden, a festival programme. Up to 18 participants, around an hour, by registration.

Portrait

An edition made with an artist. The shared opening and closing, the card and the Sound Charter stay the same; the artist's sound world enters the channels.

Closed group

An edition arranged for invited groups and organisational teams.

Edition types grow with venues and collaborations; each new type appears here with its first edition.
